Professional Learning Engagement Plan

To address the needs of the Visual Communication Design curriculum (Accreditation Period 2024 – 2028) a developed understanding of design industry contexts, technical drawing conventions and systems, and digital design applications including Adobe Illustrator, SketchUp and Fusion360 will be essential to supporting students’ engagement in design centred learning. Invested awareness of the design fields; messages, environments, objects and interactive experiences in both global and national contexts aims to help students bridge connections between learning and occupation, simulating the experience of working as a designer beyond their studies, regardless of their chosen pathway. It is essential to further understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures in Design Practice. This will also be instrumental in Unit 2 Area of Study (AOS) 2 – Cultural Ownership and Design.

HITS (High Impact Teaching Strategies):

The worked example: develop your own folio that reflects the double diamond design process - covering each design field, or key parts that target part a particular design field

Refer to exemplars from high achieving design students - see Top Designs at Melbourne Museum.

Independent Learning:

Develop an understanding of the technical drawing specifications and systems – Isometric, Planometric, Elevations, Floorplans, siteplans, in a range of manual and digital forms.

Essential Research:

Teaching Art and Design in Indigenous contexts;

These strategies and resources work toward the achievement of standard 6 in AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership) Teaching Standards which identifies that teachers “engage in professional learning” by “identifying and planning professional learning needs” and “engaging in professional learning and improvement practice” (AITSL n.d)
